Uzbek President Stresses Importance of the Country’s Early Accession to WTO

On June 5, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received the World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

The practical measures taken for the accession of our country to the WTO were considered.

It was noted with satisfaction that two meetings of the Working Group had been held in a short period, that negotiations with member countries were being actively pursued, and that discussions had begun on the modalities of support for agriculture, work is continuing to harmonize national legislation with the Organization’s rules and regulations.

The importance of cooperation in developing a “green economy”, e-commerce and digital services exports was also noted.

Special attention was paid to improving the capacity of Uzbek experts in the regulation of international trade. In this context, it was proposed to establish a Trade Policy Competence Centre in Uzbekistan with WTO support.

The Head of our State thanked the WTO Director-General for participation in the “round table” and meeting with the students of the leading universities of Uzbekistan, and congratulated her on awarding the title of Honorary Doctor of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

In conclusion, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala expressed support for Uzbekistan’s efforts to join the Organization.
