President Inspects Restoration Work at Kosh-Madrasah Ensemble

03 Nov 2026

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the Kosh-Madrasah architectural ensemble in Bukhara.

The Abdullah Khan Madrasah is one of the unique monuments of 16th-century Uzbek architecture. It was built in 1588–1590 at the initiative of Abdullah Khan II, an outstanding military commander and statesman who ruled the Bukhara Khanate under the Shaybanid dynasty.

The layout and interior structure of the madrasah differ from those of traditional Bukhara madrasahs and feature complex engineering solutions. The main entrance to the complex faces south and is decorated with geometric mosaics made of blue ceramic tiles and glazed decorative elements.

In the 16th century, the madrasah was one of the largest and most prestigious centers of higher education and science in Mawarannahr. Students studied both religious and secular disciplines here. In particular, along with the Quran, Tafsir, Hadith studies, Fiqh, and theology, Arabic language and literature, logic, philosophy, mathematics, geometry, and medicine were taught in depth.

The Modari Khan Madrasah, built by Abdullah Khan II in 1566–1567 in honor of his mother, is located in the southern part of the ensemble. The two madrasahs face each other along the same axis.

The Kosh-Madrasah architectural ensemble underwent partial restoration in 2023-2024 as part of a project worth 6 billion soums. Today, the ensemble receives about 1 million tourists annually.

The Head of State was presented with plans for the further restoration of the Kosh-Madrasah architectural ensemble.

The President instructed officials to create more comfortable conditions for tourists.
