Measures to Develop the Electric Vehicle Industry Presented

06 Feb 2024

On February 6, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed with a presentation on measures to expand the production of electric vehicles.

Our country has great experience and the necessary infrastructure for the automotive industry. Today, 8 factories produce dozens of types of cars, passenger and cargo transport, agricultural and special equipment. More than 2,000 cooperatives produce components and spare parts.

At the meeting held in December last year, the President stressed that electric vehicles are rapidly entering our lives and gave instructions for the development of this sector. During his state visit to China in January this year, the President visited the headquarters of the BYD company. A project to assemble hybrid and electric vehicles was launched with this company in  Jizzakh region. During the meeting with the head of the company, there was an exchange of views on increasing the production capacity to 500 thousand units in the near future.

The demand for such work can be seen in the tenfold rise in electric vehicle sales in Uzbekistan over the past three years, with 35% of car imports in 2023 being electric and hybrid vehicles.

In this regard, the responsible officials were instructed to expand the previously defined plans for the electric vehicle industry and to accelerate the implementation of projects. The need to establish the localization of components for electric vehicles with the involvement of partners from “BYD” was emphasized.

In order to be competitive in this new industry, innovation and advanced technology are required. The aim is therefore to create an integrated system linking the Turin Polytechnic, engineering centres, scientific institutes and laboratories.

The development of this sector will also increase the demand for specialists and workers. In the next three years, this need could reach 10,000 people. In this context, it was pointed out that it is necessary to start training qualified personnel now.

It was decided to develop a programme for the development of charging stations for electric cars.
