Mirzo Ulugbek School Established in Karabakh

23 Aug 2023

On the second day of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Azerbaijan, the two Leaders and their spouses visited the cities of Fizuli and Shusha.

Over the past 30 years, Fizuli has been completely destroyed and turned into a ghost town. Before the hostilities, around 18 thousand people lived here.

Following the start of reconstruction work in 2020, life is gradually returning to the city. Housing, social, and transport infrastructure are being built.

At this important and difficult moment, Uzbekistan stands by Azerbaijan. The relationship between our peoples is deeply rooted in history. We are united by a common religion, language and traditions, spiritual values and cultures.

As a sign of strong friendship and solidarity, at the informal summit of the Turkic Council on March 31, 2021, the Uzbek President noted Uzbekistan’s readiness to contribute to the restoration of monuments, cultural and educational sites in Karabakh.

The practical embodiment of the Uzbek President’s initiative was the construction of the modern school No. 1, named after Mirzo Ulugbek, for 960 pupils in Fizuli city.

The school has 40 classrooms, 6 laboratories, 2 IT rooms, 5 functional classrooms, assembly and sports halls, a canteen, and a library. A football pitch, places for recreation and organizing events, and running tracks, are built on its territory.

The new school will serve to further unite our peoples and introduce Azerbaijani youth to the rich history and culture of Uzbekistan, the heritage of our great ancestors.

The Leaders of the two countries, accompanied by their spouses, cut the red ribbon and formally opened the school.

The Presidents toured the school’s educational buildings and territory, and warmly conversed with pupils, wishing them success in their studies.

Later, the Presidents visited a residential complex under construction in Fizuli.

The Presidents met with the residents of the complex, who received the keys to their new apartments. The Head of our state congratulated them on their new houses.

During the cordial conversation, the strong friendship and brotherly relations between the peoples of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan were emphasized.

The Leader of our country noted with satisfaction the return of normal life in Fizuli and highly praised the creative work carried out under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev for the restoration and development of Karabakh and creation of the most comfortable conditions for the people. They wished the people of Azerbaijan peace, serenity, and prosperity.

The Heads of state visited the new apartments. The Leaders then went to the observation deck and viewed the aftermath of the destruction and the progress of the construction work. The Uzbek President was briefed on the plans for the restoration of Fizuli.
