The first “Central Asia – European Union” summit to be held in Uzbekistan

On April 3-4 the events of the first “Central Asia – European Union” summit will take place in the city of Samarkand.

The summit, which will be chaired by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, will be attended by the President of the European Council António Costa, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, and the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

The event, held under the slogan “Investing in the Future” will also be attended by the heads of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.

According to the agenda, the prospects for the development of multifaceted relations and practical cooperation between the countries of Central Asia and the European Union will be discussed.

The focus will be on issues of expanding investment cooperation, increasing trade turnover, promoting joint programs and cooperation projects in the fields of innovation, “green” energy, mining, agriculture, transportation, logistics, and digitalization, as well as continuing active exchanges in the areas of culture, tourism, science, education, and other priority sectors.

The heads of delegations will also exchange views on current aspects of international and regional politics.

According to the program, the leaders of Central Asian countries and the heads of key EU institutions will jointly participate in the plenary session of the Samarkand International Climate Forum, which will begin its work on April 4.

In addition, a number of bilateral meetings between the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the heads of foreign delegations are planned on the sidelines of the summit.
