On June 8 this year the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with Amina Mohammed, the United Nations Deputy Secretary General, who is visiting Uzbekistan.
The delegation of the main international organization also included the head of the UN Economic Commission for Europe Olga Algayerova and the UNDP Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Roly Astana.
The sides have discussed the topical issues of further expansion of the multifaceted and productive cooperation with the UN institutions and centers as part of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the country.
Amina Mohammed has conveyed sincere greetings and best wishes of the Organization’s Secretary General António Guterres to the President. As it was noted, the UN highly appreciates the open and pragmatic policy, as well as the program of radical reforms to build a New Uzbekistan, fully consistent with the main objectives of the global agenda for sustainable development until 2030.
At present, Uzbekistan actively cooperates with all UN structures – more than 200 projects in various directions are jointly implemented. Uzbekistan is a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
In recent years, on the initiative of Uzbekistan, a number of important special resolutions of the UN General Assembly have been adopted. In addition, the UN Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region, which has been declared a zone of environmental innovation and technology, has been established.
The productive practical cooperation is expanding with the United Nations Development Program, the Economic Commission for Europe, the World Health Organization, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNIDO, FAO and other bodies of the global organization.
During the meeting, a special attention was paid to the continuation of intensive contacts and exchanges, deepening cooperation and implementation of joint activities to ensure the fulfilment of the main Sustainable Development Goals in Uzbekistan aimed primarily at improving the quality of life and well-being of the population.
As priority areas of partnership were again identified the issues of poverty reduction, food security, promotion of large-scale reforms in health and education, implementation of the national strategy for gender equality, rapid development of «green» energy, innovation and digital technologies, modernization of infrastructure and others.
The sides have also had an exchange of views on international politics and regional issues.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has noted with deep satisfaction the significant progress achieved by the Central Asian states in strengthening the relations of friendship, good-neighborliness, trust and partnership in the region.
She has also backed Uzbekistan’s efforts to promote a long-term peace and socio-economic reconstruction of Afghanistan, including by promoting the major transport and energy projects.
Following the talks, an agreement was reached on implementing a set of joint measures to further develop Uzbekistan’s full-scale cooperation with United Nations institutions and agencies based on the adopted roadmaps.
