Khokim of Navoiy Region Appointed

A special session of the Regional Kengash (Council) of people’s deputies was held in Navoiy.

The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended the session.

At the beginning of his speech, the President expressed his deep respect for the region’s residents and proposed to hold the meeting in the form of an open dialogue.

«Our most important purpose of today’s meeting is to have a frank exchange of views. We need to find a solution concerning 330 mahallas (local neighborhood community areas), 1 million 50 thousand residents of Navoiy region. Distinguished deputies, the elderly and the youth, you will do me a favour, if you tell me about your concerns and existing problems. Should we, consulting with our people, find a solution to all issues, there will definitely be a result», Shavkat Mirziyoyev has said.

The current status of development of Navoiy Region was analyzed during the conversation. Over the past three years, major industrial projects worth $2 billion have been launched in the region. As a result, more than 10 thousand new jobs have been created, additional tax revenues in the amount of 1 trillion Uzbek soums and $100 million of exports per year have been provided.

It was noted that the region has great potential and opportunities for further economic development. For instance, imported products can be produced by local entrepreneurs on the basis of cooperation. In agriculture, the livestock industry is not fully activated. There are few storage facilities for fruits and vegetables. There are also problems in social sphere concerning the population.

The organisational issue was considered at the meeting. The President has recommended Normat Tursunov’s candidacy for the post of khokim (governor) of Navoiy Region.

N. Tursunov was born in 1972 in Tashkent Region. He has worked in state tax system for many years. Since November 2021, he has been working as the khokim of Navoiy Region.

Before discussing the candidacy, the President invited to hear the candidate’s program. Normat Tursunov made a presentation of his plans for the development of entrepreneurship, industry and agriculture in the region, as well as the creation of decent living conditions for the population.

The President approved these proposals and identified measures for their implementation.

In order to develop entrepreneurship in the next year, the task was set to create 26 local industrial centers and small industrial zones, to allocate 600 billion Uzbek soums for programs of family entrepreneurship. It was underscored that Navoiy Region generally has all opportunities to become a region without poverty and unemployment.

Next year, 186 projects will be implemented in the industrial sector with the creation of 15 thousand jobs. This will be an important factor in reducing imports and increasing exports to $250 million.

In Khatyrchi, Karmani, Navbahor, Kyzyltepa and Nurata districts 72 makhallas specialize in growing potatoes, vegetables, grapes and pomegranates. The President emphasized the need to improve the water supply for 5,000 hectares around these makhallas.

Besides, the instructions to create pasture seed farms, ferula plantations and agro-logistic centers were given.

A particular attention is paid to the development of social sphere, the construction of schools and kindergartens, the provision of housing and drinking water to the population. In general, an additional 655 billion Uzbek soums will be allocated to solve social problems in 2023 and 750 billion Uzbek soums to develop family business.

Following the presentation, the members of the Regional Kengash discussed plans of the candidate and expressed their opinions. The nomination of khokim of Navoiy Region was put to vote. According to the results, Normat Tursunov was appointed for the post khokim of Navoiy Region.

The President of Uzbekistan underscored that plans presented at the meeting must be effectively implemented, and all agencies must unite around the khokim and serve the people.
